Summer
Brown Trout
Generally very hard to tempt during the Summer but at times they can be found with Lures trolled with a downrigger at depths of up to 20 metres. The most likely place to find then is around the North Shore, but don't expect many at this time of year.
Rainbow Trout
Fishing from the shore at dusk and dawn with a variety of baits will often attract Rainbows. Suggested bait to try is Powerbait in a variety of colours, mudeyes under a float or minnows fished in the same way. You can usually expect the average size to be around the 700 grams as these will be fish from the current years release.
Australian Bass
The warmer months are the prime time to target the Bass as they tend to shut down once the water temperature drops. The best method is to use soft plastic lures, fished from either Potter Point or around the North West Corner of the North Shore Beach area. Hard bodied lures can also be used, but they will need to be a deep diving variety. Bass tend to be around the 1.8Kg at present in the Lake, but no new fish have been stocked since.
Quinnet Salmon
As there will be no new releases of Quinnet Salmon until further notice due to a shortage of fish at the Hatchery. Notes on the best method for this species will be added when stocks are again released. At this stage it may be 2010 before any further releases.
Autumn
Brown Trout
Depending on the year but Brown Trout usually start to become active around April and May. Early Autumn is the best time to start and target Brown Trout with Lures set around 10-15 Metres in conjunction with a downrigger. As the water temperature starts to drop to around 12 degrees the fish start to become more active and a few will start to be landed off the shore using minnows, mudeyes and flatheaded gudgeon (locally referred to as 'bullheads').
Rainbow Trout
Rainbow Trout will also start to take Lures at this time and the same method as used for Brown Trout will usually produce fish. Boat fishing will also start to improve and PowerBait, Mudeyes and Minnows will also take fish. At this stage the average size of the Rainbows has increased to around 1.2Kg.
Australian Bass
The bass will be starting to shut down now and are not a viable option to target.
Winter
Brown Trout
This is the time of year that the large Brown Trout start to make their presence felt, you can expect fish up to 4Kg to be taken. Usually flatline trolling will be the best at this time as the fish will be in, and around, the shallows chasing minnows. Bait will also come into its own now and if you are prepared to put in the hours after dark and use a Bullhead set approximately 30cm under a float. Using this technique you may well be rewarded with a good trophy Brown Trout up to, and at times in excess of, 4Kg.
Rainbow Trout
Boat fishing is the best way to target Rainbows during winter and PowerBait fished on the bottom is usually the best approach. Mudeyes, Worms and Minnows are also well worth a try.
Spring
Brown Trout
Trolling either a flatline, or with a DownRigger later in the day should produce fish but you will usually only have to set the Lures at around 5-10 metres. Boat fishing at dusk and after dark is still worth a try until the water temperature rises about 16 degrees.
Rainbow Trout
Again some of the Rainbows will start to move out into the deeper water and Lures are a good option. Land based fishing is still well worth a try.
Lure Selection
Brown Trout
Lofty Cobra lures in a variety of colours and sizes are the best to use here.
Hard bodied Lures in a variety of Patterns
Soft Plastics worked from the shore will also be successful
Rainbow Trout
Lofty Cobra Lures are again well worth a try
Hard Bodied Lures in a small Minnow Size
Wonder Wobblers are also useful
Bass Soft plastics in 'Watermelon Colour' and 'Double Tail Grub'
Hard Bodied Lures which diver to around 5 Metres
Bait Selection
Bullheads & Minnows Generally fished about 45cm under a float, ideally hooked through the loose skin located just above the back of the head.
Bullheads can be potted in a bait trap, best placed near the Disabled Fishing Platform.
PowerBait When Fishing with Powerbait use a running sinker rig.
Mudeyes Fished under a float - it is worth experimenting on the depth, depending upon the time of day / season. Generally depths of 60cm to 2m will produce fish.
Glassies Fished either on the bottom, using a running sinker, or under a float - about 60cm - 1m down.
Scrub Worms Usually best fished with a running sinker using about 1m of leader. Often the best results from this bait come after a period of heavy rain.
